Deaths

Deaths that occurred in Western Australia since 1841 are registered in the Western Australian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. 

The Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 1998 requires that a person’s death is registered within 14 days of the date of death.

Privacy & Disclosure of Information

The collection of information is authorised by the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 1998. This information is used for registering life events occurring in Western Australia and issuing certificates

Access to certificates is only approved in accordance with the Registry's Certificate Access and Identification policies. General information regarding these policies is available from the Registry's website at Death Certificate Access Policy and Identification Requirements.

Registry legislation also allows the Registrar to release information to approved agencies for statistical purposes, medical research, community planning, law enforcement and other uses provided for by law.

Customer warning - online certificate companies

The WA Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages is aware that some private companies have set up official-looking websites to charge people for downloading copies of birth, death and marriage forms. The forms are available on this website for the public to download at no cost. These companies have no affiliation with the Registry and any complaints about their operations should be directed to the WA Department of Commerce's Consumer Protection division.
